Class 9 Science Key Points and NCERT Solutions

Chapter 1. Matter in our environment

Class 9 Science Chapter 1 describes the physical nature of matter like the matter is made up of particles and what is the shape of these particles. This further explains the characteristics of the particles of matter such that there is space between them, they are moving with some kinetic energy, and they attract each other with a special force. We all know that matter has three states – solid, liquid and gas. In Chemistry Chapter 1 of Class 9 Science, we will learn about the properties of matter in different states. Changes in position due to temperature, pressure or other factors are also important for examination.

Chapter 2. Is the matter around us pure?

Class 9 Science Chapter 2 explains all types of substances, whether pure or a mixture of two or more pure substances. Homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures and their properties are frequently asked questions in Class 9 Science school examinations. Here we have to learn what types of solutions are there, how these solutions are prepared and how to find the concentration of a given solution. After doing this we will also be able to understand about suspension and colloidal. The properties of suspensions and colloids are also important from examination point of view. Separating components from a mixture using various methods is given at the end of this chapter. We can apply these methods in daily life to understand better.

Chapter 3. Atoms and Molecules

Class 9 Science Chapter 3 deals with the Laws of Chemical Combination, Law of Conservation of Mass and Law of Constant Proportions. Here, we will study that atoms and molecules are the fundamental building blocks of all matter. What is an atom? How big are they? What are the ancient or modern symbols of atoms? These types of questions are new for class nine students. Atomic masses and their symbols usually start from class 9 and play an important role in higher classes. Along with the knowledge of ions – cation or anion, we should also carefully understand the important molecules and their valence. Writing the formula of any compound, using the criss-cross method, is the most important part of Chemistry Chapter 3 of Class 9 Science. Questions based on molecular mass and mole concepts are also important for class tests or school terminal exams.

Chapter 4. Structure of the atom

Class 9 Science Chapter 4 is based on sub-atomic particles like Proton – P, Neutron – N and Electron – E. It also explains the various stages of discovery of the structure of atoms and its sub-parts. The structure of the atom includes the atomic models of JJ Thomson, Rutherford and Bohr. Rutherford’s experiment, its observations and conclusions are considered important topics of Chemistry Chapter 4 of Class 9 Science. Here we have to learn about valency, atomic number, mass number and their relation with each other. To remove any confusion in further classes we should understand the difference between isotope and isobar.

Chapter 5. Fundamental Unit of Life

Class 9 Science Chapter 5 is the first chapter of Biology in Standard 9. This chapter tells us how Robert Hooke discovered the cell using a piece of cork. The cells are too small to be seen with the naked eye, but we can see the cells forming temporary layers of onion peels under a microscope. Here, we will be able to learn about cells like bone cells, blood cells, smooth muscle cells, nerve cells, etc. in the human body. Structural organization of the cell, plasma membrane and its interactions with isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic solutions. Grade 9 Science, Chapter 5 is briefly described in the Biology section. We should know about the functions of cell wall, nucleus and cytoplasm in the cell. The main point of this chapter to study is the complete description of plant cell and animal cell with its components like Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, mitochondria, plastids, vacuoles and cell division.

Chapter 6. Tissue

Class 9 Science Chapter 6 explains about tissues of plants and animals. Plant tissues include explanation about meristematic tissue – used for plant growth and permanent tissue – permanent in shape, size and function (simple and complex permanent tissues). Animal tissues cover topics related to epithelial tissue (also known as covering or protective tissue), connective tissue, muscular tissue, and nervous tissue. Nerve cells or neurons are the basic units of the nervous system. Nervous tissue is made up of these neurons. Neurons are the longest cells in the human body. An individual nerve cell can be up to a meter long.

Chapter 7. Speed

Class 9 Science Chapter 7 includes all the words that describe the motion of an object. Most of the topics are based on motion on a straight line or uniform motion. During the study of uniform or non-uniform motion we will learn to find the average speed or speed during a specific period of time. Chapter 7 of Class 9 Science contains many numerical problems in Physics following the three equations of motion. We must understand the difference between velocity and speed as well as distance and displacement. Graphical representation of motion and derivation of the three equations of motion graphically are often asked in school examinations. The concept of uniform circular motion and numericals based on it are also important for the exam.

Chapter 8. Force and Laws of Motion

Class 9 Science Chapter 8 starts by focusing on balanced and unbalanced forces. Later the effect of friction force and inertia also gets included in it. The main objective of studying Chapter 8 of Class 9 Science is to understand the laws of motion under the influence of force. Here, we will start with the first law of body motion and inertia. Later, along with the law of conservation of momentum, the second law of motion was also applied. We have to base all the text questions and practice questions specifically on the laws of motion and momentum. Finally, several reasoning questions based on the third law of motion are given to understand about the law of action-reaction.

Chapter 9. Gravity

Class 9 Science Chapter 9 Gravitation is based on the concepts of Universal Law of Gravitation and Gravitation. We should know that according to the law of gravity every object is attracted by other objects with a variable gravitational pull. The relationship between the universal gravitational constant g and the gravitational acceleration g is also important for terminal examination or orbit testing. Chapter 9 of Class 9 Science also explains the difference between mass and weight while considering the value of g. We know that G is constant, but the value of gravity varies according to the changing radius of the earth. Due to the elliptical structure of the Earth, the value of g is maximum at the poles and minimum at the equator. Concepts of buoyancy, buoyant force, pressure and thrust, Archimedes’ principle of flotation and relative density are the topics for exam preparation.

Chapter 10. Work and Energy

Class 9 Science Chapter 10 explains that work and energy are the same things only the states have changed. Work is different from energy or we can do work with energy. Questions based on constant force and uniform motion are given in the form of text questions. Mechanical energy is basically divided into two types as kinetic energy and potential energy. Kinetic energy of an object is due to its motion while potential energy is due to its current position. The sum of potential and kinetic energy is considered mechanical energy. Other forms of energy are heat energy, chemical energy, electrical energy and light energy. Law of conservation of energy, work done, power and commercial unit of energy are the main topics for numerical exercises. The relationship between 1 unit and the joule is important in derivation as well as numerical problems.

Chapter 11. Sound

Class 9 Science Chapter 11 deals with the production and motion of sound. We know that sound travels at different speeds in different materials but does not travel in vacuum because it requires a physical medium to travel. Characteristics of sound wave or longitudinal wave and the concepts of compression and rarefaction along with frequency, amplitude and speed are important for this section of Class 9 Science. We should also know about loudness, softness, intensity, low and high pitch of sound waves. Most of the numeracy in Chapter 11 of Class 9 Science is based on speed, wavelength and frequency. Reflection of sound, including the concept of echo, is important for conceptual questions. At the end of Chapter 11 of 9th Physics, concepts of resonance, instruments based on multiple reflections of sound, range of hearing, sonar and applications of ultra-sonic waves are given for practice.
