Overpopulation : A Serious Problem

Overpopulation Problem Essay : The problem of overpopulation arises when the population of a species exceeds the carrying capacity of its ecological slot. Overpopulation is a function of the amount of individuals compared to important resources, such as water and essential nutrients that are necessary for their survival. This could be the result of an increase in the birth rate, a fall in the death rate, an increase in immigration, or an unforgivable biome and resource exhaustion.

In the wild, the crisis of species overpopulation is often resolved by increasing the population of predators. Predators have a tendency to look for signs of weakness in their prey and for this reason they first eat old or unhealthy animals. This has the drawbacks of managing prey populations and ensuring its development in support of inherited characteristics that improve prey avoidance. Overpopulation Problem Essay

How to control overpopulation?

In the absence of predators, species are tied to the resources they can find around them, but this does not automatically control overpopulation, at least in the short term. An abundant supply of resources can create a population boom that ends up with more individuals than the environment. Under these conditions, starvation, thirst, and sometimes aggressive competition for scarce resources can cause a sharp reduction in population in a very short period of time.

Some species appear to have a measure of self-control, by which individuals stop mating when they find themselves in a crowded environment. This chosen restraint may be induced by stress or by pheromones.

In an ideal setting, when the animal population increases, so does the number of predators that eat that specific animal. Animals that have birth defects or weak genes are unable to fight for food with stronger and healthier animals.

In fact, an animal that is not a resident of the environment may have an advantage over native ones, such as being unsuitable for predators that live. If left unrestrained, such an animal can quickly overpopulate and eventually destroy its environment.

human overpopulation problem

Human populations have been increasing steadily since the end of the Black Death in about 1400, although the greatest increase in the past 50 years has been mainly due to medical advances and increased agricultural productivity. The rate of population growth has been decreasing since the 1980s. As of 2011, the United Nations Population Division projected that global population expansion would slow down by 2050, stabilizing at around 9.15 billion. The latest estimates for Earth’s carrying capacity under current conditions are about 4 billion to 16 billion. In 2013 the human population was estimated at 7 billion. The world population is expected to increase by an additional one billion by 2025. Depending on which estimate of overpopulation is used, humans may or may not be overpopulated.

The Inter-Academy Statement on Population Growth, circa 1994, stated that many environmental difficulties, such as the increasing intensity of atmospheric carbon dioxide, global warming and toxic waste, are provoked by population expansion. Other ills associated with overpopulation include increasing claims for resources such as clean drinking water and food, hunger and undernourishment, the use of natural resources – such as fossil fuels, faster than the pace of their renewal, and declining living conditions. However, some believe that abuse and over-consumption, especially by affluent countries, is causing more damage to the environment than overpopulation.

We need to take a quick action towards this problem and this can be done by bringing awareness about the shortcomings of over population, otherwise we will face some big crisis in the coming years.
