Essay on Yaas storm : A Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas (Arabic pronunciation) was a relatively strong and very damaging tropical cyclone that made landfall in Odisha in late May 2021 and made significant impact in West Bengal. The second very severe cyclonic storm of the 2021 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, Yaas formed from a tropical disturbance that was first noticed by the Indian Meteorological Department on 23 May and began monitoring. were in favor as the oceanic system formed a deep pressure area later that day.



The cyclonic storm was named Yaas, before intensifying the next day. The system further intensified as it turned northeastwards, becoming a severe cyclonic storm on May 24 despite moderate wind gusts. Moderately to storm-friendly conditions continued as Yaas moved to the northeast, strengthening to a Category 1-equivalent tropical cyclone and a very severe cyclonic storm on May 25. Yaas crossed the northern Odisha coast about 20 km south of Balasore as its peak intensity. Cyclonic storm on 26 May.

In preparedness for the storm, several power companies in West Bengal and Odisha built additional generators and transformers to make up for potential power problems. Evacuation was ordered in low-lying areas of East Midnapore and West Midnapore and Jhargram from May 24. Hooghly, Kolkata and North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas were put on high alert. The Union Ministry of Power of India had prepared transformers and generators in case of power failure. The health ministry also made preparations to ensure that there is no disruption in vaccine supplementation and COVID-19 treatment. The Ministry of Telecommunications monitored all telecom towers and exchanges. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi also arranged an emergency meeting to prepare for the cyclone. The NDRF had kept 65 teams in reserve along with another 20 teams. Also, NDRF has deployed 115 teams in 5 states. Rescue and relief teams from the Indian Army, Navy and Coast Guard have also deployed in the coastal districts of Odisha and West Bengal.

Assessing the threat of Yas in the country, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reserved 225 disaster centers for evacuation complexes.349 shelters were prepared, accommodating half the capacity of people to maintain the COVID-19 health restrictions.  114 medical officers were prepared for medical emergencies.  Food supplies were also prepared for the evacuated, while Bangladeshi officials, including the country’s cyclone preparedness program and its navy, were on standby and high alert since 24 May.

The Sri Lankan Meteorological Department issued a red alert on 24 May for the possibility of heavy rain and strong winds from Yaas for the western, central, Sabaragamuwa and southern provinces of the country.

Some fields were damaged by floods across Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand, while small boats were damaged within the Bay of Bengal.  Power lines in these states collapsed, causing thousands of power outages.

More than 4500 villages have been damaged. Various rural households and agricultural land were badly affected, and even basic needs like drinking water, sanitation, and the like were difficult to meet. At least 143 marine vehicles were broken into.

From May 25, as heavy rain and strong winds lashed the coastal and inland areas of West Bengal, the storm reached Kolkata. An outbreak of tornadoes was reported in North 24 Parganas and Hooghly districts prior to the arrival of Cyclone Yaas . One tornado reported in Halishar and another in Chinsurah. Two people died, with five injured and 80 houses damaged. The knee-deep floods caused by torrential rains inundated the beach areas of Digha, while palm trees were torn down by the strong winds of the cyclone.

Chandabali reported rainfall of up to 39.31 cm (15.48 in) between May 24–26, which also caused flooding. In West Bengal, 3 lakh houses were damaged, while in the state alone about 1 crore people were affected.

Two farmers of Pandua were struck by lightning in their fields, killing both of them, while a senior citizen of Asansol died after his house collapsed on him.  Two more people died after being hit by uprooted trees in West Bengal.  More than 1,100 villages in West Bengal were submerged in floodwaters caused by storm surges, displacing about 500,000 people.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the total loss in West Bengal from this system was estimated at ₹20,000 crore (US$2.76 billion) in the state alone on 29 May.

Despite heavy rains in Odisha, many residents were evacuated, so few felt the impact of Yaas . The state was still heavily affected, with settlements in 120 villages flooded and heavy rain damage. Paradip received 36 cm (14.21 in) of rain on 25 May.  A 15-year-old boy was found dead in a pond in Jagannath Khunta village of Mayurbhanj. One death was reported in Keonjhar town on May 26, when a tree fell on it, killing one person.

In Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi, two people were reported dead as they were trapped in a collapsed house, ultimately unable to be saved and died there.  In Jharkhand 1,500 houses were damaged, one million people were affected and 18 people were injured. Another two people died in Ranchi when a five-year-old bridge connecting the city’s Tamar block with Bundu and Sonahatu blocks collapsed.Agricultural land worth 75 hectares was destroyed.

In Bihar’s largest city Patna, 3.85 cm (1.51 in) of rain was reported by the Meteorological Center in the region on May 27.The highest rainfall accumulation in the state was recorded in the city of Gaya, which was 6.88 cm (2.70 in) on the same day. Seven people died in the flood caused by the Yaas in the state of Bihar as it moved further inland.

It also rained from Yaas till Uttar Pradesh, where light rain in many areas of the state including Ballia, Mau, Deoria, Ghazipur, Azamgarh, Varanasi, Chandoli, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Sultanpur, Jaunpur, Allahabad Hui. Maharajganj, Naugarh, Basti and Ayodhya and Bhadohi and Sant Kabir Nagar districts.

In Sidhi and Shajapur in Madhya Pradesh, the remaining moisture content of  Yaas resulted in light rainfall, which was 0.5 cm (0.19 in) and 0.4 cm (0.15 in) respectively on 28 May.

However, on June 5, protests erupted at Gosaba in South 24 Parganas demanding concrete embankments as it was breached by Cyclone Yaas . After this the protest spread throughout South Bengal. Opposition parties are pressuring the state government to build concrete embankments instead of rebuilding sandbars and weak soil embankments. The state government has already proposed the construction of concrete embankments following reports of embankment breaches in South Bengal.
